City of Zachary

About Zachary

The City of Zachary offers the convenience of a metropolitan area with all the charm of small city living.  This growing community topped the list this year among Louisiana cities with the highest annual household estimated income of $77,299. With education a top priority, the Zachary Independent School District has been ranked first in the state since 2005. With youth in mind, a popular attraction for residents is the city-operated Zachary Youth Park Complex, offering programs year-round for youth and adults of all ages.

Zachary boasts a state-of-the-art medical facility, Lane Regional Medical Center. With more than 800 dedicated team members, Lane Regional Medical Center is the largest employer in the City of Zachary. In 2021 Lane announced a major hospital expansion, including a new four-story patient tower, renovations of the existing surgery department, and renovations of the first floor.  Groundbreaking is slated for the summer of 2022 and is projected to be complete in spring 2024.

Retail business is growing, and a “Buy Zachary First Initiative” was instituted to provide for the expansion of Zachary’s infrastructure, encouraging business and economic development. As you ride around Zachary, you will notice new business owners remodeling, renovating, and rehabilitating some of the cities’ older buildings. You will also see many businesses updating interiors, and completely redeveloping spaces for different use. Building permits are a good barometer for the future economy of our city as the population of Zachary continues to grow. In terms of dollars, the city issued over $738,000 dollars in building permits from 2015 to 2020 inside the city limits.

The city has a well trained and equipped Police Department and Fire Department.  Zachary is noted for its low crime and attributes this to the extra training and community policing of its police force. In 2020, the City of Zachary announced that the Zachary Fire Department earned a Class 1 rating from the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana. As a result, businesses and homeowners potentially receive a reduction in their insurance premiums.  Zachary joins ten cities in the State of Louisiana with this highest classification. In 2021, Zachary opened Station #83, which now serves as one of four for the City of Zachary. The newly staffed firehouse allows quicker response time for fires and medical emergencies on the east side of the city.

Developing the Downtown area is the next step in the progress and quality of life enhancements being made in our City. We have a new vision for Downtown Zachary, and plans are underway to create a thriving revitalized downtown district that represents the family focused values of our growing town.  This will include an entertainment district, shops, and dining with safe convenient parking. Redeveloping Main Street into a boulevard in keeping with Complete Streets philosophy to calm traffic and encourage walkability will be part of the overall revitalization plan.

Zachary continues to be one of the fastest growing small cities in Louisiana offering an affordable, comfortable, and secure lifestyle. It is truly a great place to work, raise your family and call home.

The future of our city is bright! When you shop local, your dollars stay in the community and help local development.
